Song of Day (a Poem About Life)

Ever had a bad song stuck in your head, slowly torturing you with its contemptible but still-catchy chorus? Sometimes I feel as though life is that way. But then I realize, I’m the deejay at this funky affair. When some self-depreciating thought or soul-sucking notion won’t leave my brain, it’s up to me to change the station, to sing a new song and motivate myself with something that inspires me.
I wrote the poem below with the thought that life is a personal journey, and each of us travels with a different mindset, expectation, and level of caution or sense of freedom. As you read it, consider the song that’s stuck in your head. Remember that your life can be as rhythmless or melodic as you make it.
Song of Day
The feathered wings of day unfold
With flecks of dawn and sprays of gold
The rote bird sings the song of day
And feeble hands aspire to pray
Fools cling to the hem of past
With eyes behind and feet steadfast
Eager men hold empty cups
With bellies full of wanderlust
And the feathered wings of day unfold
With flecks of dawn and sprays of gold

I love this. Especially the lines “Fools cling to the hem of past
With eyes behind and feet steadfast”. The whole rhythm is done so nicely 🙂

Awww, thanks, Alexandra. That’s my favorite verse too. It’s a reminder to always look ahead and keep my feet fluid and my gaze on what’s here now. 🙂

Beautiful poem. I definitely get in a rut, with the same thought playing in my head. I’m trying to make a conscious effort to change and be in the moment.
