Liebster Award: The What, Why and How…

I got an email from a blogger I never met. She told me she’d nominated me for the Liebster Award. My initial response was to ask my personal assistant what this thing was all about. So I said, “Siri, what is the Liebster Award?”  She promptly scoured the Web and filled me in. Here’s what we discovered…

The Liebster Award

What: The Liebster Award is a blogging award, given by one blogger to another.

Why: Because bloggers know maintaining a decent site is no simple task. It takes a bit of technical skill to work out bugs and kinks…but there’s more. It’s a lot of typing when your shoulders ache, and fingers feel enslaved. It’s picking at your supper while plucking at your keyboard. It’s post planning, traffic analyzing, audience engaging, crazy-computer-geek stuff.

Yes, if anyone knows about word bleeding and soul searching, it’s a dedicated blogger. So when we see a fabulous blog that’s aesthetically pleasing, easy to navigate, and well-written too, we give that blog a what? A Liebster Award, of course…along with a virtual fist bump and a woot woot!

Shortly after my first nomination from Jessica Barrett of Mrs. Jones Could Use a Beer, I received another Liebster Award nomination from Author Lisa Morrow. I now stand on my virtual podium wearing my special occasion dress and thank these ladies for choosing this monkey for the award. You’re so kind, ladies.

How: Accepting the award requires I also: answer a few questions posed by the ladies who nominated me, and in turn nominate other worthy bloggers. So here goes…

Liebster Award Q & A

What motivated you to finally start your blog?

I have been writing since I could hold a crayon. I haven’t outgrown Crayola, but I have transitioned to the keyboard. I started writing professionally in 2006, but blogging came much later. Yoga Mat Monkey is the place I’ve evolved to — in my writing life and in every aspect of myself.

How did you come up with your domain name?

I was cleaning my house and the name appeared in my head like all my ideas do, randomly and at the worst possible times (I was holding a mop).

What are your blogging goals?

Although I have been known to obsess over my analytics, feeling so personally insulted when my traffic takes a dive, I want high numbers for a reason. I honestly go gaga when I think of meeting cool people from all walks of life and connecting with them on my site, at blog conferences, and all over the world. I don’t think it’s vain to say I have a gift, because we all have gifts. I want to use mine to inspire people even as they inspire me. It’s all about connections.

Do you have another job outside of writing/blogging?

I do. I have this phone booth where I change my clothes and become another personality. Ha ha. I am a healthcare marketer by day.

What part of the country/world do you live in?

I live in Ocala, Florida but I’ve only been here since 2009. I’m originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin — home of beer, brats, and snow…and no, I don’t miss any of it. I do miss fallen leaves and a few friends and family.

Are you an introvert or an extrovert?

I’m an extroverted introvert! Actually, I like (need) to be around people, but I prefer intimate gatherings over big noisy crowds — most of the time.

Who has been your life’s biggest inspiration?

My grandparents and my Aunt Debby. They had the time and ability to love me with literature, lollipops, and all the things my little heart craved growing up.

What are you most afraid of?

Mice. I’m terrified of those little crumb-snatching vermin. That seems odd because I love animals and insects, too. Even snakes, actually.

What, if anything, prevents you from pursuing your wildest dreams?

That voice in my head that tells me to be good and sensible, to take the practical path and forget about authenticity. I’m learning to go “bully beat down” on that voice . It’s time she learned her place.

How would your best friend describe you?

My best friend told me I was a dream chaser. I think I may have paraphrased that, but she did tell me she’s so proud of the way I set goals and achieve them. It’s not always been that way. I’m becoming less afraid of putting on my big-girl boots and hiking up my mountains.

Have you met the love of your life?

Yes. He knows who he is, and because he is so amazing and supportive, I bet he’s reading this, too. Awwww ♥

Now that I’ve ranted, I can finally recognize some other great bloggers for their awesome work on the Web.
