You see them on social media– the glossy pics with hard bodies balanced on the curious circular devices. Some are hot pink, others are hand-carved, made of cork with lovely embossed chakra designs. They are yoga wheels — the newest yoga props making their way into workshops, Youtube tutorials, and yoga studios everywhere. So of course I had to snag my own — for the sake of research and all.
In my last post, I told you I’d be revealing my birthday gifts, and I’d be remiss to leave this bad boy out of the conversation. Yes, I got a beautiful bouquet of yellow roses, massive amounts of chocolate, a mandala coloring book, a spa gift certificate, a lotus flower phone case, and some other cool goodies. But my yoga wheel was truly the best thing I’ve unwrapped in a while. Here’s why I’m so psyched about this amazing apparatus.
Hooked on a Feeling…
Who doesn’t love a good stretch in the morning? But since I got my yoga wheel, I find myself stretching all day. I hop on it sporadically because I’m hooked on the feeling I get when I roll out the kinks in my neck, shoulders, chest and back. Hunching over a keyboard, driving, and just being oblivious to my posture can take a toll on my body, causing undue tension. At first, I felt odd rolling on my wheel, like a dog relieving an itch on the rug. But then I remembered it was my birthday, and I totally earned it…
Since then, I have discovered various yoga videos online and found some awesome ways to incorporate the wheel into my everyday practice. I’ve learned how to go deeper into poses I’ve already mastered, how to use the wheel to work my core, and how to make difficult asanas more accessible. I’m currently working towards Kapotasana, and I’m just short of touching my feet in this frustratingly difficult backbend (it’s hell, I tell ya!). With my yoga wheel, I feel safer practicing, more stable posing, and completely supported as I arch.
I’ve also discovered some cool variations to poses I’ve been doing for years. So just getting on my mat with this new toy makes the practice feel brand new, and every pose is a surprising adventure. So in short, the yoga wheel has totally rocked my world, and is making me a happier, more flexible, fierce yogi.
If you’re wondering whether to pull the trigger on a yoga wheel purchase, I say go for it! And if brand names don’t impress you, buy a bargain wheel instead from a reputable manufacturer. In my opinion, this prop does not disappoint.
Do you have a yoga wheel? Have you found it to enhance your practice?
